Birch Run Speedway
Richardson Nearly Wins It All But DeLong and His Co-Pilot Have Other Ideas
The action at Birch Run Speedway and Event Center is rapidly drawing to a close for the 2022 season, so it was no surprise that the stands were packed as fans gathered to watch round four of the Monster X Metal and Gold Eve of Destruction Series! Fans were also treated to the Grand Opening of the Gas Alley Bar located underneath the main grandstands that features Michigan's largest bar at 130 feet as well as a cash grab put on by the folks at United Financial Credit Union and the destruction of a motorhome at intermission!
Anthony Richardson would start his winning ways for the night by scoring the win in the Pull Race over Eric Gilbert, Tim Crabb, Hudson Corl and Terry Lorenz. Switching from pulling to pushing, Richardson would once again cross the finish line first, this time ahead of Aaron Abeare, Eric Gilbert, Deric Davis and Tim Crabb.
An event that was made popular "back in the day" at the Mt. Clemens Speedway, the Double O Enduro returned to Birch Run Speedway with 38 drivers signed in to compete and complete 30 laps on the big track and 30 laps on the small track. Jason Grissom and Richardson led the field to green with Richardson getting the advantage going into turn one of the 4/10 mile. Josh DeLong, Dan Smith and Paul Rigda III would all soon follow and give chase to Richardson. Richardson navigated other vehicles going on to the 1/3 mile and back on the 4/10 mile to maintain the lead until DeLong closed the gap. The two battled nose to tail for several laps, with DeLong trying high and low to get by the #422. Near the halfway point, DeLong got to the inside of Richardson in turn two of the third mile and got the lead. Richardson would fade and eventually pull off with a flat left rear tire. with 31 laps to go, Smith took advantage of a bobble by DeLong to assume the lead. While that battle was going on Eric Gilbert made his way around Rigda to take over the third spot. DeLong took the lead back over when Smith went spinning to the infield. A red flag to check on the condition of Lexi VanAtta bunched the field up for a standing start and put Gilbert and Rigda right behind DeLong. DeLong would take off withe lead and never give it up to score the win! To the surprise and delight of all, it was revealed in victory lane that DeLong had a passenger in the form of videographer Kyle Hill riding alongside him during the whole race! Darby Christensen was scored second ahead of Aaron Abeare, Cam DeLong and Rigda.
Richardson would get back to his winning ways in the first Flag Pole Race by holding off a hard charging Aaron Abeare. Abeare got to the tailgate of the #422 with two laps to go but wasn't able to get by Richardson. Behind Abeare were Chris Persails, Darby Christensen and Terry Lorenz. Justin June led early in Flag Pole Race number two until he tangled with second place Destiny Gilbert with two laps to go. The contact briefly stalled June, allowing Gilbert to get to his back bumper. June regrouped and held on to pick up the win over Gilbert, Jason Dvorscak, Jerod Carl and Alex Moore.
In the Back To School Bus Race, William Grubbs and Jason Dvorscak settled in to first and second with Justin June in tow as the 35 entries played "red light/green light" with the moving busses. Nick Plummer would slide by June to take over third. Soon, Eric Gilbert joined the mix. At the halfway signal, Dvorscak led but Gilbert was on the move. Gilbert timed the lights of the bus to pass Dvorscak and take the lead. Anthony Richardson had fought his way through the field to take over third and then second from Grubbs and Dvorscak. On the white flag lap the duo of Gilbert caught one of the busses in turn two. Gilbert went high and Richardson low, with Richardson pulling even with Gilbert in three and ahead in four to take the win! Finishing in third was Nick Plummer followed by Grubbs and Dvorscak.
In the School Bus Figure 8 race it was Gilbert coming from the back to the front to take his second Bus Figure 8 win in a row!
The fans then got to vote for their favorite decorated trailer and Nick Plummer took home and extra $100 for his Snoopy/Woodstock flying the Red Baron themed trailer! In the race it was all Anthony Richardson as he started on the front row and took the lead and dodged loose trailers and other competitors to take yet another win on the night!
