Saumier Jr Doubles Up on Wins and Championships While McManus and More Win on Championship Night!

The 2022 points season wrapped up at the Birch Run Speedway and Event Center on Driver Homecoming Night as past and present drivers were welcomed in to be a part of the night's festivities! Qualifying was up first with Jeff Owens leading the way for the Street Stocks with a 15.659 lap. Fred Cummings Jr paced the Sportsman class by turning a 17.317 lap. Mike Schmidt set quick time for the Applebee's Sport Compacts when he turned a 17.718, but his lap, as well as Keith Hazel's lap of 17.735 put both over the breakout time of 17.750. That gave fast time to David Smith (18.177). Dan Shamel set quick time for the American Trucks when he went 18.105. Lonnie Saumier Jr was quickest in the Pure Stock class, turning a 17.242. David McManus set quick time for the DTS Drive Train Specialists Modifeds (15.952). Jason Jones led the way for the Applebee's Pro Compacts (16.576).

Coming into Championship night, Lonnie Saumier held a 14 point advantage over Jim Miller Jr. Ron Hart and Saumier would gain the advantage. As the field battled for position, Saumier stretched his lead out. Hart would fall back and get passed Miller Jr and Owens as the duo tried to chase down Saumier. Saumier would never give up the lead en route to the win and sealing the Championship for the season! Miller Jr held off Owens for second with Adam Rowe and Ron Hart rounding out the top five.

The Sportsman class featured another tight points battle as Fred Cummings Jr came into the night just 12 points ahead of Jim Miller Sr. Miller had the better starting spot for the green as he lined up fourth while Cummings started ninth. Casey Snover and Bo Smith led the charge into turn one and Snover grabbed the lead. Duane Damon moved his way into second with Nick Lechota in tow. Four laps in and Cummings grabbed fifth place. Lechota got around Damon and then go around the outside of Snover to grab the lead on lap five. Miller's night ended after contact between the K9 machine and Hunter Forrester's #88 sent Miller for a wild ride across the front stretch, through the grass and over one of the tractor tires. With 20 to go, Lechota continued to lead over Snover, while Damon and Cummings battled. Lechota would set sail and go on to claim the victory. Snover finished second with Damon hanging on for third ahead of 2022 Sportsman Champion Cummings Jr. Bo Smith completed the top five finishers.

The Applebee's Sport Compacts feature rolled out for their 25 lap feature and Josh Shiver and Lexy Motsinger took the green flag as the front row but it was Anthony Duvernois grabbing the early lead. The field stacked up momentarily and Blake Gokee, Gerry Persails Jr and David Smith would make their way to catch the leader. Gokee would get around Duvernois for the lead three laps in. Persails gave chase and closed on the back bumper of Gokee. The battle stayed bumper to bumper until three laps to go when the leaders caught traffic and Gokee was able to scoot away for the win. Behind Persails at the finish were David Smith, Jeff Asmus and Anhony Duvernois. Despite being moved to the Applebee's Pro Compacts for the night, Mike Schmidt had enough points accumulated to claim the 2022 Applebee's Sport Compact Championship!

The autograph session at intermission treated the fans to candy, hero cards and autographs from their favorite drivers from the past and present. Bob Dickey also had his car on display in the main concourse and was allowing fans to climb in and take pictures throughout the night. After the autograph session, the American Trucks ran their 25 lap feature. Ricky Glillett and Justin Pepitone brought the field out of turn four with Ryan Cudd making it three wide into turn one to come out of turn two with the lead. Cudd tried to get away but Josh Delong caught and passed him for the lead eight laps in. Dan Shamel had made his way through traffic as well and went to the outside of Cudd with 11 laps to go. DeLong's lead got smaller and smaller as Shamel closed to his tailgate. While the top two pulled away, Cudd had his hands full as he battled with Cam DeLong, Zach Ahrns, and Paul Rigda III. Shamel tried to get by DeLong but lost some ground as DeLong would go on to claim his fifth win of the season and be crowned 2022 Champion! Shamel, Cam DeLong, Ryan Cudd and Paul Rigda III completed the top five.

The Pure Stock 25 lap feature was chaotic as after a complete restart the cars would go nearly five wide into turn one! Andrew Shelters took advantage and took the lead with Mike Mosier and Saumier following. A caution bunched the field and Shelters took the inside on the restart. Andrew Burton moved in to second spot and got by Shelters to take the lead with five laps completed. By lap 11, Saumier had gotten to second and after pressuring Burton, was able to get by on the inside of turn one to take over the top spot. The caution flew on lap 12 and Saumier took the inside for the restart. Saumier maintained the lead while second in points, Hunter Doutre, moved to third. Saumier never faultered and cemented his 2022 Championship by picking up the win! Doutre managed to get by Burton for second with Andy Shelters and Jon Parish finishing fourth and fifth.

David McManus held a 40 point lead over Donny Matteson Jr coming into the night but with Matteson and Nick Clemens both not racing, that made Nick Lechota his closest points battle with a 56 point gap. After three tries at a good start, Bob Farley grabbed the lead on the high side of Matt Maki out of turn two. On lap three Mike Occhipinti's #12x went for a slide into the infield on the front stretch and it also involved the cars of Dave Christensen and Maki. Scott Clifford moved himself into the top spot when he got around the outside of Farley out of turn two with four laps complete. The field continued to battle with Robbie Johnson getting inside of teammate Kyle Hayden with McManus right behind. Lap 15 saw the caution wave for an incident involving Rick Wiecorek and Evan Foster. Clifford took to the inside on the resart and held the lead until Robbie Johnson got by as McManus got around Farley to take over second. Farley's machine looped around on lap 25 after battling with Occhipinti. Johnson restarted on the inside but McManus got an incredible run on the high side entering turn one and came out of turn two with the lead. MCManus would go on to claim victory and repeat as 2022 Champion! Finishing second through fifth were Johnson, Occhipinti, Nick Lechota and Jason Parish.

33 points was the difference between leader Billy Luckhurst and Jason Jones heading into the night. Kurt Schmidt and Greg Long led the field for the start with Long taking command. Jones and Luckhurst made their way to the front and on lap 11 they split Long on the backstretch as Jones went low and Luckhurst went high! Jones exited turn four as the new leader. Mike Schmidt would get by brother Kurt for third. Jones bobble in turn one, but regained his composure and went on to claim the feature win. Luckhurst locked up his 2022 Championship by finishing ahead of Mike Schmidt, Greg Long III and Blake Gokee.

The night wrapped up with Justin Pepitone and Jerod Carl the front row for the Motor City Core Figure 8's. Pepitone got the early lead but was soon hounded by the duo of Andrew Burton and Anthony Williams. The two got by Pepitone and stayed nose to tail though the intersection and around the turns until late in the race. Williams peeked his nose to the inside of Burton in turn three and the two bumpers hooked long enough to send Burton around. Williams would go on to victory lane while Burton, who held on for seond, would join him in the winner's circle as Burton was crowned 2022 Champion. Pepitone finished third ahead of Tim Crabb and Dustin Hitsman.

While the points battles are over, the action at Birch Run Speedway and Event Center is not!
