Saumier Jr, Luckhurst and Dent Claim Cash on Invite Night at Birch Run!

Extra cash was on the line Friday night at Birch Run Speedway and Event Center as the Pure Stock class was racing for $850 to win, the Applebee's Pro Compacts $500, and the Applebee's Sport Compacts $400 to win on this special night. In qualifying action, Gary Koepke led the way for the Applbee's Sport Compacts with a 17.886. Jason Jones set a new track record for the Applebee's Pro Compacts with a 16.244. Dan Shamel once again set quick time for the All American Trucks at an 18.251 lap time, while Kyle Callahan led the way once again with a 16.593 for the Pure Stocks. Nick Lechota doubled up in qualifying by setting quick time in both the Sportsman class (17.169) and Street Stock class (15.401 and new track record).

Heat race action made its return, and winners were Duane Damon in Sportsman, Andrew Burton and Lonnie Saumier Jr (Pure Stocks), Tim Lahar (Street Stocks), Josh Shaw and Anthony Richardson (All American Trucks), Billy Luckhurst (Applebee's Pro Compacts), and Mike Koepke and Gary Koepke (Applebee's Sport Compacts)

Abby Kolb and Anthony Duvernois paced the field for the start of the Applebee's Sport Compacts feature, but after some intense racing, it was Mike Schmidt taking over the top spot. Schmidt, who was looking for his third win of the season, soon had company as on lap 5 Pat Dent moved into second spot from his eighth starting spot. The top two tried to pull away, but Gary Koepke joined the battle until lap 16, when Koepke got a right front tire after trying to get to the inside of Dent for second. Schmidt held the lead through two more cautions until the last lap when he slipped up in turn one, allowing Dent to the inside. The pair drag raced down the backstretch with Dent coming out of turn 4 and across the line with a .093 advantage for the win. Gary Koepke rebounded to come back to third while Randy Moore and Mike Koepke were the top five.

The Pure Stock class saw Lonnie Saumier Jr come from his eighth starting spot to claim the $850 pay day. The win was not easy, as Saumier had to battle to the front and first get around Kevin Strong and then hold off the challenges of Hunter Doutre and then Jason Spencer. Spencer chased Saumier across the line followed by Callahan, Andrew Burton and Brent Voris.

Birthday boy Kevin Harder led the Sportsman feature until a lap 13 caution. Harder chose the inside on the restart, putting fast qualifier Nick Lechota to his outside. Lechota used the momentum on the high side to power around Harder to take the lead. From there, Lechota would hold off the challenge of Fred Cummings Jr to continue the theme of eighth place starters winning the main event. Casey Snover, Duane Damon and Matt Mueller rounded out the top five.

The All American Truck feature got off to a bad start in turn one when contact in the field sent the truck of Greg Long III sideway and back down the track into the path of the field. As everyone tried to checkup, Long was hit by his father Greg Long Jr, who was rear ended by Darby Christensen. Josh Shaw and Joe Shamel were also involved with heat race winner Shaw suffering a ton of damage. When racing resumed, Anthony Richardson charged to the front and went on to double up on the night. Long III rebounded from the first lap mess to finish second followed by Josh DeLong, Paul Rigda III and Ryan Cudd.

In the street stock class, Saumier Jr and Tim Lahar took the green from their front row starting spots, with Saumier getting the advantage. Saumier would continue to lead until Adam Rowe applied pressure and took over the top spot. Once by Saumier Jr, Rowe would fend off a charging Jim Miller Jr to take the victory. Saumier Jr settled for third ahead of Nick Lechota and Dave Damon.

Kurt Schmidt and Blake Gokee started on the front row for the Applebee's Pro Compacts $500 to win feature, but by turn two, Billy Luckhurst and Jason Jones charged to the top spots. Jones tried high and low to get by Luckhurst, but Luckhurst would prevail and pick up the 20 lap feature win.

The night wrapped up with the Motor City Core Figure 8 feature. Anthony Williams and Andrew Burton got in front of the pack and set sail to do battle. The two were nose to tail when Burton peeked the front of his #05 to the inside of Williams. Burton looped his machine after the slight contact while Williams stayed in the gas and pulled away. Williams lead was cut short a few laps later when his right rear tire started going down, allowing Burton to close the gap and eventually make the pass. Burton went on to claim the win ahead of Todd Nelson, John Hitsman, John Hitsman Jr and Williams.

This Friday night June 24th will be round two of the Monster X Metal and Gold Eve of Destruction! The night will feature Figure 8 action as an Enduro Figure 8, Trailer Figure 8, and Bus Figure 8 highlight the night along with Push Races, Pull Races and Flagpole Races. There will be a stunt at intermission as well as Fireworks and the Mini Wedges make their return for an action packed night!
